POSTHUMANISM, POSTMODERNISM, TRANSHUMANISM, CLEANLINISM
AUTOMAGICDIDACTISM (as in magically self-learnedism)
 Because you were
wondering: POSTHUMANISM: In literary and critical theory, posthumanism or post-humanism,
meaning beyond humanism, is a major European continental philosophy of the late 20th and early 21st
centuries. It strives to move beyond the ideas and images of the world of Renaissance humanism to correspond more closely to the 21st century's concepts of technoscientific knowledge. It mainly differentiates from
classical humanism in that it restores the stature that had been made of
humanity to one of many natural species. According to this claim, humans
have no inherent rights to destroy nature or set themselves above it in ethical considerations a priori. "The term " TRANSHUMANISM" is often used as a synonym for
" human enhancement". [20] Transhumanism is sometimes erroneously referred to
as " posthumanism," especially in the United States where that term
is not as common outside academic sources. In one interpretation, transhumanism
is a subordinate of the postmodern critique of humanism known as posthumanism, [21] and while all
transhumanists may, in this sense be posthumanists, it has not been, nor should
it be, claimed that all posthumanists are transhumanists.
POSTMODERNISM
(sometimes referred to as Pomo, Po-Mo, or PoMo [1], [2], [3]) was coined in the early 1960s to describe a
dissatisfaction with modern architecture, founding the postmodern architecture. [4] It became then a term for the reaction to modernism
in other fields as well, especially the fields of postmodern literature or Postmodern music. When the
idea of a reaction, or even rejection, of the movement of modernism (a late 19th, early 20th centuries art movement) was
borrowed by other fields, it became synonymous in some contexts with postmodernity, a term for the evolutions in society, economy
and culture since the 1960s. [5]

The biggest mill in Holyoke has the newest artists' garrets in town and YOU
can peek inside about a dozen of them.
The 2nd floor gallery will be
hung with works, and it's a very nice gallery indeed, with views of the old
firehouse, train station and low RR bridge over Lyman. Perhaps you will
get lucky and the bridge will catch a truck while you watch.
Paired with this event is an exhibit of works by students
from Holyoke Community College and faculty from the Five College
area.
Open Studios will continue on Saturday, April 28th from 10:00AM to
4:00PM, with demonstrations and ballet performances, and on Sunday, April 29th
from 1:00PM to 4:00PM. The on site café will be open during the
week-end.
The Black Sheep Deli is in the complex and will be open
at least some of the time.

SPRING CONCERT FEATURES INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES & CHOIRS
April 28,
1 PM. NCMC Annual Spring Gala Concert
On Saturday, April 28, 2007 at 1:00 pm,
instrumental ensembles and choirs of the Northampton Community Music Center will
present their annual Spring Gala Concert at the Helen Hills Hills Chapel in
Northampton.
This year's Gala concert is free, but monetary donations will be collected
to benefit the Northampton Survival Center, a non-profit organization providing
food and essential supplies to low-income individuals and families in the
Hampshire County area.
The concert will begin with an informal welcoming performance, beginning at
12:30 pm, by the NCMC Brass Ensemble, directed by Donna Gouger. Other
groups performing in the Gala include: the Northampton Community Children s
Choir, directed by Joan Cornachio; the Kuumba Women s Choir, under the direction
of Evelyn Harris; Catherine Kay s High Definition Vocal Ensemble; groups of
Suzuki Flute, Cello, and Violin students; the Flutations flute ensemble,
directed by Andrea Kwapien, and a Youth Chamber Quartet, under the direction of
Sally Bagg.
The 2007 Spring Gala concert is open to the public. Helen
Hills Hills Chapel is located on Route 9 on the campus of Smith College. For

In this darkly ironic and comic adaptation of Kafka's story
"Metamorphosis", Moise has written Kafka's Gregor / now Gregora as a critically
ill, aging mother who has supported her family working in the sex industry. With
her illness, as depicted in her transformation into insect, we glimpse a woman's
deterioration of power within the boundaries of "body as currency". Her family,
having been supported and loved by her, eventually turn their backs on her
change, which they can not comprehend. At first, they respond with attempts to
help her, then progressively become confused, sad, frustrated, angry, disgusted,
cruel and finally violent in the face of her struggle and demise.......

poems." is a just a sample from Refusing Heaven, Jack Gilbert's fourth book of
poetry, and while he is often called the poet of sadness, many of his poems
contain lighthearted moments. Gilbert will be honored as the Poet Laureate of
Northampton on Sunday April 29, 2007 from 3-5 at APE Ltd Gallery 3rd Floor
Thornes Market.
April is National Poetry month and this event will feature a rare
reading by Jack Gilbert, and, in tribute to Mr. Gilbert, there will also be
readings by; Henry Lyman, Janet Aalfs, Margaret Lloyd, Donald Brees, Anne Love
Woodhull and Bill O'Connell. In a true spirit of camaraderie, and to demonstrate
their respect and admiration for his poetry, these poets will read a selection
of Gilbert's poetry and as well as from their own works worthy of Gilbert's
influence on their craft. |

Description: Does a landscape have a memory? After sixty-two years, can
that landscape hold the memory of human suffering? Can an artist capture those
images of our collective memory of the Holocaust? These are some of the
questions that have driven this photographic investigation into these places of
horror. To find what remains.Using vintage Kodak Hawkeye Brownie cameras, dating
from the late 1940 s, photographer Sondra Peron traveled to a small town in
Austria, on the north bank of the Danube River, called Mauthausen in August of
2004. Sondra returned to Europe in November of 2005 to continue work on the
concentration camp series, as it seemed incomplete without visiting Dachau in
Germany and Auschwitz in Poland.
The camps in Auschwitz, Dachau and Mauthausen represent a much
larger
extermination program that encompassed hundreds of satellite
camps
throughout Europe until the end of the Second World War.
Unfortunately,
use of the term genocide did not end with the fall of the
Third
Reich, atrocities have occurred in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and
Serbia.
In the 21st century, the statement never again still
seems elusive as
populations in Darfur, a region in western Sudan, are currently
being
subjected to ethnic cleansing.
Currently, Sondra Peron is an MFA candidate in photography at
the
Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She lives in
Northampton and works for the Northampton Arts Council.

The Robert Floyd Photo Gallery (Southampton, MA)(park in the Town Hall
Parking Lot)is proud to announce limited edition black and white photographs
will be on exhibit and sale throughout April. Many images never previously
exhibited in The Gallery will be hung in both Gallery rooms. The first exhibit
will concentrate entirely on the "British Invasion" from April 1 thru April 15.
Then, other artists, mainly from the USA will grace the walls from April
17 thru April 30. All images are from Barrie's famous Legend Series, a portfolio
of one hundred infamous images.
Barrie Wentzell, an internationally recognized photographer, was born
in the mists of Northern England, now living in Toronto. Barrie was the chief
photographer for Melody Maker Magazine, forerunner to Rolling Stone Magazine
from 1965 - 1975. Barrie's commitment to his work coupled with his uncanny
ability to capture the essence of the subjects he portrays has gained him public
and critical acclaim. As Barrie once confided, "The picture gives you an
impression, the music tells you everything. I wasn't trying to make them God, I
was trying to make them truthful."
Barrie's "Legends" include Neil Young, Diana Ross, Led Zeppelin,
Leonard Cohen, Ian Anderson, Robert Plant, The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Leon

WHO: Photographers based in New England.
We encourage traditional and non-traditional photography including new
media,installations, mixed media, etc.
WHAT : Our Museum seeks to display and honor
regional photographers. Jurors are Karen Haas, Curator of the Lane
Collection, at the Museum of Fine Arts and Arlette Kayafas, Director, of the
Kayafas Gallery in Boston for our upcoming New England Photographers Biennial
Exhibition. The exhibition will be on view this Fall 2007 at the Danforth

Art Walk Easthampton, a monthly, self-guided
walking tour of arts and culture, has added a proposal page to its website where
visual, music and performance artists can outline what they would like to show
or perform if given the opportunity.
All the locations that participate
in Art Walk Easthampton can view the submissions for possible inclusion in an
upcoming event. The talent describes the work, provides images, identifies the
types of venues they would like to be in, the dates they are available and
provides contact information. If there's a match between the submission and the
venue's interest, the venue contacts the talent directly to handle booking
arrangements.
The proposal form is available at www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and is open to all local and
regional artists.

An offer
from Joe Blumenthal of Downtown Sounds who generously would like to have artists
display their work there. (Downtown Sounds, 21 Pleasant St., Northampton, next
to the Pleasant St. Theater)
The window is quite large, and has three
panels, each one about 6' X 6', and is about 24" deep. It is exposed to intense
sunlight in the morning; the heat of the sun plus the narrowness of the window
make it inappropriate to display most musical instruments.
However, the
sunlight doesn't hurt most artwork since it's only exposed for a month to six
weeks. I normally pay $150 to the artist who installs the window, and work out a
consignment agreement for the store to take a percentage of the price if the art

The artwork can be
freestanding, lean against a wall at the back of the window that's about three
feet high, or (if it's not heavy) be hung from the ceiling.
It's great when
the art can have a musical theme, but it's not necessary. Because of its highly
visible commercial location, the work should have a mainstream appeal and not
have themes which could be offensive. Small pieces don't work well since the
window is so large.

FREE CREDIT COUNSELING FOR LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS
Valley CDC Expands Business Services to Include Credit
Counseling Northampton, MA,
March 23, 2007: Valley Community
Development Corporation (Valley CDC), a community-based non-profit organization,
is now offering personal credit counseling. This free one-on-one counseling is
available to people who want to open a small business in Valley CDC's service
area - Easthampton, Northampton, Hadley & Amherst. Current small business
owners with 20 or fewer employees are also eligible. There are no income
restrictions. This free credit counseling is available through June of 2007 via
a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Business and Technology.
According to David Plaut, Small Business Credit Counselor for Valley CDC,
"We know that credit scores play a very significant role when applying for a
business loan. We want our clients to secure financing, so we set them up for
success. Credit reports and credit scoring can be confusing. We can decipher
that information and help people boost their scores."
Valley CDC has been helping entrepreneurs start new enterprises and
expand existing small businesses for more than 18 years. Since 2003, Valley CDC
has counseled more than 250 individuals and businesses, and helped them acquire
more than $470,000 in funding from conventional banks and community loan funds.
Valley CDC's clients include companies in many diverse businesses, including
restaurants, manufacturers, beauty salons, spas, artists and artisans, clothing
designers, and retailers.
According to Joanne Campbell, Executive Director of Valley CDC, "We are
very excited to be able to expand our small business technical services to
include credit counseling. Our current grant will fund this service until June
30, 2007, so we hope that local entrepreneurs act on this opportunity quickly.
We are also hopeful that the legislature will recognize the economic benefits
that all Massachusetts communities gain from their investment in local
entrepreneurs and small businesses, and continue to fund the program beyond that
date."
